Post Bariatric Surgery TIP 12
After bariatric surgery, you must develop a lifelong habit with daily supplements, which mostly include Multi-vitamins, Vitamin D, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin B12. Prescription drugs or, over the counter drugs are generally absorbed differently after surgery. Sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric banding do not have much change or no change in the absorption of medications. But Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and duodenal switch can have major changes in how medications are absorbed. Regular monitoring of the dosages is recommended as you start losing weight. The dosages of some medications have to be decreased as the health conditions improve with the loss of weight. Patients with high BP or cholesterol have to get their medication toned down as weight loss happens. There are some medications that can cause marginal ulcers in Gastric bypass patients, which can get very painful for many years, and are a common cause for re-operation. So, it is always advised not to administer your own medications and to consult your surgeon. Sometimes some medicines can cause weight gain as a side effect. In cases like this, you must consult your doctor and discuss the most beneficial course to take.
